Bad luck hampers TJR's opening weekend at Volusia
Beginning his rookie season with the World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series, Tony Jackson Jr. made the trek to Volusia Speedway Park (Barberville, Fla.) on Thursday evening for the DIRTcar Sunshine Nationals. With 38 cars on hand for the three-day event, Tony laid down the sixth fastest lap in his time trial group before placing second in his heat behind Darrell Lanigan. Receiving the seventh-starting position for the opening night feature via the redraw, Jackson Jr. was closing in on a Top-5 finish in his debut but lost a motor in the final five laps that brought a disappointing end to his night. Returning on Saturday after Mother Nature axed Friday night’s contest, Jackson Jr. came in fifth fastest in his group but suspension issues in his heat sent him into the wall. Charging from the tail of his B-Main, Tony grabbed the third and final transfer spot, which positioned him 21st on the starting grid for the $10,000-to-win finale. His bad luck continued in the 40-lap feature when he was caught behind a multiple car tangle on lap 23, ending his weekend early.
